Your interest in Swiss foreign policy and my work as head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs is very encouraging.

Foreign policy concerns us all because it is about making our country’s most important interests with regard to security and human wellbeing a reality. Switzerland does not exist in isolation. Like other countries nowadays, it is affected in various ways by major global challenges such as environmental problems, terrorism, epidemics and conflicts both within and between other countries. International cooperation and constructive participation are needed to address these challenges. To stand apart not only shows indifference to the efforts of others, it also means that ultimately we have to accept decisions made by others without our views and priorities being taken into consideration.

It is my concern therefore that people understand more about Switzerland’s foreign policy. For this reason, I would like to conduct a discussion on the many different aspects of this subject with a wide public. Please don’t hesitate to write to me if you have any comments or suggestions you wish to make.
