Swiss Maritime Navigation Office

Based in Basel, the Swiss Maritime Navigation Office (SMNO) supervises maritime navigation under the Swiss flag. It is attached to the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) because maritime navigation is mainly a matter of international law. The ultimate supervisory body is the Federal Council.

The core responsibilities of the SMNO are statutory supervision and enforcement in the maritime domain. It also has a department of small boats and yachts, and it is the registration authority for sea-going yachts and small craft that are used on rivers outside the country and in coastal waters.

The SMNO also acts as the secretariat of the Swiss delegation to the Central Commission for Navigation on the Rhine (CCNR).
