Representative of the Libyan National Transitional Council in Bern09.03.2011
Federal President Micheline Calmy-Rey, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA, today met with a representative of the Libyan National Transitional Council for discussions.
In these Jebril El-Waalfarvi informed the Head of the FDFA about the current situation in Libya and possible future developments from his perspective. The guest from Libya also gave an insight into the demands and the political programme of the Libyan National Transitional Council.
In the talks Federal President Calmy-Rey expressed her particular concern about the difficult conditions being experienced by the civilian population, which continues to be exposed to the ‚targeted and abhorrent violence of the Libyan authorities’. Switzerland will do all in its power to support civilian victims of the civil war with diplomatic and humanitarian aid, she said.
Leading members of the Libyan opposition set up the National Transition Council, NTC in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi on February 27. Members of the NCT executive are currently touring Europe and yesterday visited the EU Parliament.
