Presidential elections in Egypt: a key step in the transition towards democracy25.06.2012
Switzerland extends its congratulations to the newly elected Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi. The first presidential elections in Egypt following the resignation of Hosni Mubarak in February 2011 mark an evolution which the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) applauds. Switzerland now calls upon the Egyptian authorities to continue along the path of transition towards democracy.
Switzerland extends its congratulations to Mr. Mohamed Morsi on his election to the Presidency of Egypt. Switzerland welcomes his intention to be the President of all Egyptians and the importance he attaches to working towards ever strengthened national unity in full respect of Egypt’s diversity and minorities.
Switzerland also pays tribute to the Egyptian men and women who have, once again, exercised their political rights as citizens of Egypt. Their continuous and peaceful participation in the electoral process as well as their aspiration for democracy carry the political transition forward.
The Presidential election represents a key step in Egypt’s history. Before and after the uprising, Switzerland has supported Egypt in its pursuit of political freedom, economic development and social justice. Switzerland looks forward to continuing this cooperation in the framework of Egypt’s on-going transition towards democracy. In this regard, the process of drafting a new, inclusive constitution and the holding of new parliamentary elections should be undertaken as soon as possible.
