Bilateral relations between Switzerland and Oman
Switzerland and the Sultanate of Oman have intensified relations. The two nations have notably improved the framework conditions for trade between them, while strengthening cooperation at the cultural level.
At the political level, the two countries cooperate on a wide range of subjects. Switzerland organised seminars in Oman on the fight against money laundering (2002) and on protection of the environment (2005) and also supported a training programme for road police (2005 to 2007). Switzerland and Oman organised an agreement on Visa exemptions for holders of diplomatic, special and service passports, which entered into force on 18.11. 2010
As for economics, in recent years Switzerland and Oman have concentrated on improving the framework conditions for trade. A bilateral agreement on the protection and promotion of investments was signed on 17.8.2004 and entered into force on 18.1.2005. An agreement prohibiting the double taxation of revenue from international air transport was signed on 3.11.2007 and entered into force on 1.6 2009; negotiations for an unlimited sectoral double taxation agreement started in November 2010. In addition, Switzerland and Oman, together with other member states of the European Free Trade Association, and the Gulf Cooperation Council signed a free trade agreement on 22.6. 2009, which Oman has already ratified.
With flights by Swiss International Airlines and Oman Air several times a week, the Sultanate is a popular tourist destination for the Swiss.
The Swiss community in the Sultanate of Oman numbers some 101 individuals.
The two countries have also intensified cooperation at the cultural level. Oman was the Guest of Honour at the Fêtes de Genève in August 2009 and the Geneva International Orchestra responded with a concert in Muscat on 10.11.2010.
Switzerland and Oman established diplomatic relations in 1973. Today the Embassy of Switzerland in Riyadh looks after Swiss interests in the Sultanate. Switzerland also has a consulate general in Muscat. Oman's interests in Switzerland are represented by its embassy in Berlin and by its consulate general in Geneva.
