Bilateral relations between Switzerland and Tajikistan
Switzerland recognized Tajikistan in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union. As an important donor country, however, Switzerland has an excellent reputation in the former Soviet Union.
As a result of its increasing commitments in the country, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) has transformed its listening post in the capital Dushanbe into a coordination office. The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (seco) also plays a role here. Since 2001 the office has also been responsible for consular duties. In addition, Switzerland supports a programme concerned with promoting dialogue between the worldly, neo-communist parties on the one hand and Islamist parties on the other.
Tajikistan has belonged since 1993 to the Swiss Constituency Group in the Bretton Woods Institutions. Trading links between Switzerland and Tajikistan are extremely limited, although Swiss businesses are engaged in the cotton industry.
