The Political System of Lithuania
Lithuania is a presidential democracy. It has a 141-seat unicameral parliament, called Seimas. The Seimas is elected in a mixed system of popular vote every four years.
The president is directly elected for a five-year term (maximum two terms consecutively). On the approval of the Seimas, he appoints the prime minister and on the latter's nomination, appoints the rest of the cabinet, as well as a number of other top civil servants and the judges for all courts.
The Judges of the Constitutional Court (Konstitucinis Teismas) are appointed by the President (three judges), the chairman of Seimas (three judges) and the chairman of the Supreme Court (three judges) for a nine year term.
