Diplomacy

Diplomacy is the art of conducting negotiations between authorized representatives of different states (diplomats). Bilateral diplomacy takes place between two states; in multilateral diplomacy, representatives of three or more states seek a common solution (e.g. at the United Nations Organization).

By establishing diplomatic relations, two states express their intention to resolve conflicts by peaceful means while respecting each others’ interests.

Diplomats

  • represent the political, economic, cultural and military interests of their home country in their host country
  • represent the interests of their home country vis-à-vis and within international organizations
