Throughout the year, Switzerland hosts major events that resonate far beyond the country's borders. In mid-January, the Lauberhorn ski races take place in Wengen, boasting the longest downhill run of the Ski World Cup. Then, at the end of January, the most powerful heads of state meet with leaders from business and academia in Davos for the World Economic Forum (WEF).

Also in January, Geneva hosts Watches and Wonders Geneva (formerly the Salon international de la haute horlogerie), while Baselworld has been bringing together the most prestigious watch and jewellery brands in March for almost a century. In June, contemporary art aficionados flock to Art Basel, where the city extends from the banks of the winding Rhine. Founded in 1970, the vast art fair now has parallel exhibitions in Miami and Hong Kong and features 300 galleries presenting the work of over 4,000 artists.

In August, Zurich hosts the Weltklasse Zürich athletics meeting. Since its first edition, held 90 years ago, the event has brought forth 25 world records. In September, the Crans-Montana winter sport venue puts on the Omega European Masters golf competition, one of the prestigious events of its kind played on European soil.
