Livelihood Improvement Programme Takhar (LIPT) – Bridging Phase
Widespread poverty and malnutrition, weak institutions and scarce public services characterize the environment in the mountainous areas of North-Eastern Afghanistan. The Livelihood Improvement Programme Takhar (LIPT) is improving the living conditions of the rural population in Rustaq district through income generating activities and the promotion of sustainable natural resource management techniques. This last phase will allow a significant upscaling of the successful initiatives of LIPT.

| Background |
The implementation area of LIPT is situated in North-Eastern Afghanistan. The district of Rustaq is overwhelmingly rural, with a majority of people depending on rain-fed agriculture. Rapid population growth, degradation of natural resources, effects of climate change, physical inaccessibility and insecurity in surrounding provinces contribute to poverty and vulnerability of the families in Rustaq. |
| Objectives |
Poor families in rural Rustaq district improve their livelihoods thanks to improved natural resource management and rural economic development. |
| Target groups |
The proposed bridging phase of the successful interventions under LIPT III allows integrating an additional 12 villages in the watersheds for the Natural Resource Management component and an additional 12 villages closer to Rustaq town for the Rural Economic Development component. |
