To do so, it supports teacher training institutions and girls’ schools in the province of Takhar. It promotes the commitment of Takhar communities to girls’ education. On a national level, it works with the Teacher Education Directorate (TED) of the Ministry of Education (MoE) to enhance gender equality in teaching nationwide.

Contesto

In Afghanistan more than 9.1 million students are enrolled in public schools, of which 39% are girls. The ratio is similar in Takhar. This is a significant achievement given that in 2001 virtually no girls went to school. Despite progress, more work is needed to enhance the number of girls’ attending school and the quality of education. In this regard, the MoE and development partners face a number of key challenges including: poverty, security, the shortage of female teachers especially in rural areas, the poor quality of teaching, the lack of adequate infrastructure as well as cultural barriers.
