Water Supply and Sewerage Lezhë
The project "Water Supply and Sewerage Lezhë and Shëngjin" is part of a broader KfW programme called "Municipal Infrastructure I". This programme concerns the improvement of the situation of water supply and sewerage disposal in the municipalities of Gjirokastra, Fier, Lezhë and Saranda. The overall objective of the Swiss Contribution is to assist Lezhë municipality in assuring a reliable hygienically safe water supply for its population with cost covering and socially affordable tariffs as well as in providing adequate settlement hygiene through wastewater disposal.

This programme concerns the improvement of the situation of water supply and sewerage disposal in the municipalities of Gjirokastra, Fier, Lezha and Saranda. The purpose of this programme is to assure a reliable hygienically safe water supply for the population of the programme cities with cost covering and socially affordable tariffs as well as provide adequate settlement hygiene through wastewater disposal. SECO's grant contribution is proposed to benefit the municipality of Lezha. |

The Project aims at assisting the water utility of Lezhë in operating the system reliably and according to best international management practices, including in establishing good maintenance procedures and customer relations. More specifically, the main objectives of the Project are the following: i) provide the same servicing level of drinking water supply to an increased number of customers of Lezhë municipality- ii) ensure a reliable and continuous drinking water supply around the clock- iii) reduce operation and maintenance costs and maintain the affordability of drinking water, while ensuring cost recovery and increasing the municipality's ability to proceed with the rehabilitation of the water system- iv) enhance the quality of drinking water- v) improve customer relations and customers' awareness with regard to the scarcity and careful use of water resources- vi) prepare investment decisions in sanitation for the municipality of Lezhë. |
| Outcomes |
Same servicing level of water supply is provided to an increased number of customers of Lezha municipality, reaching a level of 94% for the urban population and 45% for the rural population. Drinking water supply is reliable and continuous with appropriate network operation pressure. Reduced operation and maintenance costs and affordable - including for the poor - of drinking water costs, while ensuring cost recovery and increasing the municipality?s ability to proceed with the rehabilitation of the water system. |
