As Werner Thut, Deputy Regional Director of the Swiss Cooperation for the South Caucasus pointed out in his opening remarks, the Swiss engagement in the Lori region dates more than 30 years back. Immediately after the devastating earthquake of the 7th of December 1988, Swiss experts were sent to the region to assist the survivors. In fact, the assistance activities in Spitak marked the starting point for the Swiss humanitarian and developmental cooperation in Armenia, and even the greater region, the South Caucasus. In fact, Switzerland was in Spitak long before it was in Yerevan. It was only in 2011 that the Swiss Embassy was opened.

Now, more than three decades after the first Swiss development project, we open the Spitak Citizen Office, which is a result of a collective effort of Switzerland, Germany and  the Armenian authorities. It is equipped with modern technology, dedicated to support the local citizenry and generate an animated public life. And for the 70’000 inhabitants of the municipality, it is also a gateway to the future.
