Deputy Head of Mission of the Swiss Embassy to Armenia received by the Chairman of the RA Anti-Corruption Committee

On October 27, 2021, the Chairman of the RA Anti-Corruption Committee Sasun Khachatryan received the Deputy Head of Mission of the Swiss Embassy to Armenia Werner Thut. To-date progress and future work of the program funded by Switzerland for the Anti-Corruption Committee were discussed. Mr. Thut was accompanied by Sergey Hovhannisyan, Senior National Program Officer, and Carl Ulbricht, Project Advisor.

Werner Thut, referring to the Swiss program started in 2020 to support the activities and capacity building of the RA Anti-Corruption Committee, presented the works already achieved and envisaged. The project aims at implementing specialized training programs and setting-up innovative information technologies to improve investigative work and acquisition of technical experience, as well as effective organization of the Committee’s operative work. Eventually, support to conduct investigations to recover stolen assets from abroad shall be provided.

According to the chairman of the Anti-Corruption Committee, in order to have a new quality structure, it is crucial to have a properly trained staff. And for that, it is necessary to provide the ACC employees with the essential professional knowledge, and apply that knowledge in practice, for which modern materials and a technical base are of need.

According to Sasun Khachatryan, being equipped with state-of-the-art equipment is a precondition for achieving positive results in the fight against corruption, as the methods of committing crimes are improving over time.

According to the chairman of the Anti-Corruption Committee, one of the priorities of the newly established structure will be the return of assets illegally taken out of the country, for which the support of partner countries is expected, including by involving experts and learning from European best practices. In this context, active cooperation and provision of necessary assistance, especially in matters related to international legal assistance, would be necessary.

The Swiss side expressed its confidence that the above-mentioned program will contribute to overcome the challenges pointed out by the Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Committee. On this basis, a further deepening of cooperation in the project context was agreed.
