This year, the Embassy of Switzerland celebrated its National Day in Armenia in Yerevan’s Armenia Marriott Hotel on 12 September 2014. A celebration on the actual day, August 1st, is hardly practicable in summer-deserted Yerevan, but that Friday also provided a good occasion, since on 12 September 1848, Switzerland gave itself its first constitution and thus became a modern state.

This was the topic of a two-day conference held at Sevan on September 4th and 5th, organized by the Caucasus Institute and its Swiss Partner : the Academic Swiss Caucasus Net (ASCN).

From 2 to 4 June 2014, Didier Burkhalter, Chairperson-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and President of the Swiss Confederation, will hold political talks in three countries in the South Caucasus. The region is a priority of the Swiss OSCE Chairmanship in 2014 because of a number of long-standing conflicts involving these countries. Besides issues related to the OSCE, in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia Mr Burkhalter will also discuss bilateral matters.

In the Armenian capital Yerevan, the third and final stage of his trip to the South Caucasus, the President of the Swiss Confederation, Didier Burkhalter, met with Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan. The central issue on the agenda was the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. As the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Mr Burkhalter expressed his support for a meeting between the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan which could form the beginning of a structured negotiation process for a peace agreement, and he called for the strict observance of the 1994 ceasefire. At the bilateral level, Mr Burkhalter signed a memorandum of understanding with Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan on cooperation between the foreign ministries of their two countries.
