This year, the Embassy of Switzerland celebrated its National Day in Armenia in Yerevan’s Armenia Marriott Hotel on 12 September 2014. A celebration on the actual day, August 1^st, is hardly practicable in summer-deserted Yerevan, but that Friday also provided a good occasion, since on 12 September 1848, Switzerland gave itself its first constitution and thus became a modern state.

From 2 to 4 June 2014, Didier Burkhalter, Chairperson-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and President of the Swiss Confederation, will hold political talks in three countries in the South Caucasus. The region is a priority of the Swiss OSCE Chairmanship in 2014 because of a number of long-standing conflicts involving these countries. Besides issues related to the OSCE, in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia Mr Burkhalter will also discuss bilateral matters.

In the Armenian capital Yerevan, the third and final stage of his trip to the South Caucasus, the President of the Swiss Confederation, Didier Burkhalter, met with Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan. The central issue on the agenda was the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. As the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Mr Burkhalter expressed his support for a meeting between the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan which could form the beginning of a structured negotiation process for a peace agreement, and he called for the strict observance of the 1994 ceasefire. At the bilateral level, Mr Burkhalter signed a memorandum of understanding with Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan on cooperation between the foreign ministries of their two countries.

Switzerland allocates CHF 4.500.000 to Armenia for nature protection and economic development

On April 15, 2021, Switzerland launched a new development intervention to assist the Republic of Armenia in its efforts regarding nature conservation and economic development. The Government of Switzerland approved in principle a grant worth of CHF 4’500’000 for the “Living Landscapes for Market Development in Armenia” project. In close cooperation with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), this project will be implemented by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) as a part of a broader regional program Eco-Corridor Fund for the Caucasus (ECF).   

Switzerland Supports OSCE Anti-Corruption Efforts in Armenia

On December 1, 2020, Switzerland joined ongoing anti-corruption efforts to support the Republic of Armenia in the implementation of its reform agenda to strengthen rule of law, human rights and economic development. The Government of Switzerland approved a grant worth of EUR 374’880 in view of a two-year project “Strengthening the Anti-Corruption Committee of Armenia”, which will be implemented by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in close collaboration with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. The project is part of a broader OSCE program “Strengthening anti-corruption reform in Armenia”.

Switzerland and Germany to Extend Support to Municipalities of Armenia in Response to COVID-19

Early in October 2020, the Governments of Switzerland and Germany decided to extend their support to the municipalities of Armenia in addressing challenges to local economic development in times of COVID-19. In the context of the ongoing “Improvement of the local self-governance system Armenia” programme, additional funds amounting to CHF 460,000 will be committed to the municipalities for the delivery of public services to the population in a more efficient and participatory manner.

10 Year Anniversary of the Embassy of Switzerland in Armenia

March 31, 2021, marks the 10^th Anniversary of the Swiss Embassy’s ceremonial opening in Yerevan, Republic of Armenia. Federal President Micheline Calmy-Rey, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), inaugurated the Embassy during her official visit to Armenia back in 2011. However, the bilateral ties between the two countries date back even further. 

Grant Fund Aimed At Economic Recovery of Armenian Municipalities Launched

On March 16 the Grant Fund aimed at Post-Covid economic recovery of enlarged municipalities of Armenia was launched with a kick-off workshop. The fund aims at economic empowerment of municipalities by improving market availability for businesses and cooperation with non-public institutions in the area of LED. Municipalities and public-private partnerships are eligible to apply for the Fund. The grant amount ranges from 5000 to 20.000 EUR, in exceptional cases up to 50.000 EUR. The grants are funded by the Swiss and German Governments, in the frames of the "Improvment of Local Self-Govenment Systmen in Armenia" program's second phase.

Armenia Food Security Sector - spotlight on livestock issues

Livestock farming is the main economic activity for the poorest households in rural areas of Armenia. In recent years, there have been observed an existing and potentially growing market demand for milk and meat, access to credit for the farmers, as well as state assistance in animal healthcare and initiated reforms in food safety to increase competitiveness in export markets. Despite these developments, numerous problems in this area remain. Some of those problems are the lack of market access, community level veterinary services, knowledge and skills for appropriate animal care, milk and meat production, feeding practices, and challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
