At his meeting with Prime Ministers Robert Fico (Slovakia), Bohuslav Sobotka (Czech Republic), Ewa Kopacz (Poland) and Viktor Orban (Hungary) at the Visegrad summit in Bratislava, the President of the Swiss Confederation, Didier Burkhalter, and his partners adopted a declaration providing for a regular exchange of views and seeking to promote the development of joint initiatives in areas such as education, research and economic cooperation. President Burkhalter also used his stay in Bratislava to hold bilateral talks with Slovakia's President, Andrej Kiska, Prime Minister Robert Fico and Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak.

Didier Burkhalter, Chairperson-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and President of the Swiss Confederation, took part in a civil society parallel conference today during which recommendations from civil society were submitted to the OSCE Ministerial Council. Mr Burkhalter's participation in the parallel conference underlines the importance the Swiss OSCE Chairmanship attaches to the involvement of civil society and young people in the work of the OSCE.

From 2 to 4 June 2014, Didier Burkhalter, Chairperson-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and President of the Swiss Confederation, will hold political talks in three countries in the South Caucasus. The region is a priority of the Swiss OSCE Chairmanship in 2014 because of a number of long-standing conflicts involving these countries. Besides issues related to the OSCE, in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia Mr Burkhalter will also discuss bilateral matters.

During his visit to Azerbaijan, the President of the Swiss Confederation, Didier Burkhalter, met the president of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev. The talks in Baku focused on the situation in Ukraine and on the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan concerning Nagorno-Karabakh. President Burkhalter proposed to hold a meeting between the presidents of the two countries marking the start of a structured negotiation process for a peace agreement. At the same time, he appealed for strict compliance with the 1994 ceasefire.
