On the occasion of the International Week of the French Language and Francophonie 2016 the Embassy of Switzerland in Baku presents “10 mots au gout”. A series of events dedicated to the culinary traditions and the culture of the Romandie (the French speaking area of Switzerland) with a special focus on healthy cuisine made with regional ingredients (zero km concept). To this purpose, the Embassy invites the Swiss Chef Pascal AUBERT (from Les Bois, Canton Jura).

Switzerland is famous for its multiculturalism and multilingualism. It has in fact four national languages: German (64% of the population), French (23%), Italian (8.5%) and Rumantsch (0.5%).

The French language is spoken in the Western area of Switzerland called Romandie (in 6 Cantons: Geneva, Valais, Vaud, Neuchâtel and Jura).

“La Romandie” consist of an area with beautiful mountains, wonderful lakes, vineyards, castles, great cities and villages with unique customs and traditions.

The cuisine in Switzerland is a potpourri of influences from various neighboring countries using its ingredients of the region and local cuisine. There are some famous specialties of Switzerland such as the cheese fondue, the raclette from the Valais, the capuns from Graubünden, the luganighe (cooked sausage) from Ticino and so on.

Switzerland is home to almost 350 different varieties of sausages and 450 varieties of cheese (Vacherin, Raclette, Emmental, Gruyère, Tête de Moine, Büscion, etc.).

The Swiss wines are also of excellent quality. Over 200 different vines are cultivated in Switzerland and of these no less than 40 are ancient, indigenous rarities like following wines from the Valais: Petite Arvine, Amigne, Humagne and Cornalin. The focus is on quality rather than quantity and for that reason they can hardly be found abroad.
