Bern, Press releases, 16.09.2014

The President of the Swiss Confederation, Didier Burkhalter, will take part in the traditional meeting of heads of state of German-speaking countries in Rostock on Thursday. At the initiative of Germany, both Luxembourg and Belgium have been invited to this year's meeting, which will also be attended by Austria and Liechtenstein.

This meeting is an opportunity to emphasise the importance of the political, economic and cultural ties that link the countries that share the German language.

One of the key issues to be discussed by the heads of state will be the measures being contemplated to counter the ageing of the population that is affecting these countries as well as the consequences this trend is having on their health and social systems. The talks will also address European security in light of the events in Ukraine and the role of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). Lastly, Mr Burkhalter will speak about Switzerland's policy on Europe.
