WFP UNHAS Chad

Projekt abgeschlossen

In view of large humanitarian needs in the country, humanitarian air transport service for aid community is crucial; WFP UNHAS is the only viable transport option available to reach remote areas safely. UNHAS facilitates and secures the majority of travel of SDC humanitarian aid’s agents and cooperation programs in Chad, in order to enable them to monitor partners and programs. To maintain this service, UNHAS requires the support of technical and financial partners.

Hintergrund

Humanitarian needs remain high throughout 2013. The Consolidated Appeal (CAP) 2013 for Chad amounts to $500.5 million. The CAP is supported by a three-year humanitarian strategy (2013-2015). The areas where populations in need of humanitarian assistance are living are far away from the UN agencies and NGOs field offices (sometimes 1000 km of N’Djamena). Given the poor road conditions, prevailing insecurity and remote location of beneficiary communities, travel by road is extremely risky and not-practical. UNHAS therefore remains the only safe and reliable mode of transport for the humanitarian community, as well as development agencies, and services over 100 organizations to 17 locations.

Ziele

To provide a safe, reliable and cost efficient air transport service to the humanitarian community and development agencies (over 100 UN agencies, NGOs, and donor organizations) providing assistance to 2.4 million refugees, host populations and IDPs throughout the country in 2013 until 2015.

Over 100 user organizations: UN agencies, NGOs (international and national), donors (of which SDC). UNHAS targets up to 5’000 persons per month

Resultate

Resultate von früheren Phasen:

This is the first contribution of SDC Regional Cooperation (OSA) to UNHAS Chad. With the end of the mandate of MINURCAT (31.12.2010), the demand on UNHAS air assets particularly for evacuation has increased significantly. UNHAS provides a secure and reliable air service which contributes significantly to the implementation and monitoring of programs of most technical and financial partners. In 2012 UNHAS improved aircraft utilization, and increased its operational efficiency, thanks to constant fleet, schedule and route optimization. In 2012, 128 agencies and organizations were using humanitarian air services, among which SDC (Coof and its partners). On average, UNHAS transported 5’421 passengers per month.
