Hintergrund Sudan is facing a public health catastrophe, with cholera exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis marked by war, famine, and displacement. The current cholera outbreak in Sudan is one of the worst in the country’s history, and among the largest globally in 2025, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and humanitarian agencies. Recently, since April 2025, over 379,000 people have been displaced to camps near Tawila following intensified fighting between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) in Zamzam IDP camp and around the besieged city of El Fasher. There is an ongoing cholera outbreak affecting IDPs in and around Tawila, and cholera response, WASH coverage and other humanitarian services for Tawila camps, in common with Darfur generally, is extremely low. Onward movements of IDPs from Tawila locality is spreading cholera to other Darfur states and most recently to refugee and host populations in East Chad.

MSF have requested additional support for humanitarian actors to supply cholera vaccinations (OCV oral cholera vaccinations) and in additional WASH response. The main WASH actor in East Chad and in Darfur States is the NGO Solidarties International who have long standing WASH programs in the areas affected, which since 1st June have been re-orientated to cholera response. SI closely coordinates with dedicated cholera response mechanisms, such as the Cholera Task Forces in Western, Central and North Darfur, and it has full access to all locations proposed for intervention. SI teams are already on the ground and actively working on cholera prevention and response activities and thus are able to be mobilised for implementation of additional activities within a short timeframe.
