| Contesto | Sudan is facing a public health catastrophe, with cholera exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis marked by war, famine, and displacement. The current cholera outbreak in Sudan is one of the worst in the country’s history, and among the largest globally in 2025, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and humanitarian agencies. Recently, since April 2025, over 379,000 people have been displaced to camps near Tawila following intensified fighting between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) in Zamzam IDP camp and around the besieged city of El Fasher. There is an ongoing cholera outbreak affecting IDPs in and around Tawila, and cholera response, WASH coverage and other humanitarian services for Tawila camps, in common with Darfur generally, is extremely low. Onward movements of IDPs from Tawila locality is spreading cholera to other Darfur states and most recently to refugee and host populations in East Chad. |
| Obiettivi | Provision of a Comprehensive WASH Cholera Response in Western Sudan and Eastern Chad |
| Gruppi target | IDPs and affected host populations in Darfur, Refugees and affected host populations in East Chad comprising 67,300 beneficiaries (of which an estimated number of 10,000 in North Darfur, 22,500 in West Darfur, 24,800 in Central Darfur and 10,000 in Ouaddaï) |
| Effetti a medio termine | The expected outcome of the project is to reduce cholera-associated morbidity and mortality through improved access to WASH services for affected or at-risk communities. |
| Risultati |
Risultati principali attesi: Output 1: Target communities are provided with access to clean drinking water and water quality monitoring. Output 2: Coverage of sanitation and waste management services is enhanced to prevent the spread of cholera. Output 3: Community-based disease surveillance is enhanced and awareness raising focusing on good hygiene and sanitation practices is conducted to reinforce cholera prevention and response. Risultati fasi precedenti: Aid agencies in Darfur are responding to a cholera outbreak, with their effort concentrated on medical response with treatment provided in dedicated cholera treatment centres. MSF have requested additional support for humanitarian actors to supply cholera vaccinations (OCV oral cholera vaccinations) and in additional WASH response. The main WASH actor in East Chad and in Darfur States is the NGO Solidarties International who have long standing WASH programs in the areas affected, which since 1st June have been re-orientated to cholera response. SI closely coordinates with dedicated cholera response mechanisms, such as the Cholera Task Forces in Western, Central and North Darfur, and it has full access to all locations proposed for intervention. SI teams are already on the ground and actively working on cholera prevention and response activities and thus are able to be mobilised for implementation of additional activities within a short timeframe. |
