Swiss Minister of Foreign Affairs to make working visits to Cyprus, Greece and Turkey

The Swiss Minister of Foreign Affairs, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, will visit the two EU member states Cyprus and Greece as well as Turkey from 8 to 12 July 2019. In addition to talks with his counterparts in Cyprus and Turkey and a courtesy call on the president of Greece, the programme also includes a visit to the UN buffer zone in Cyprus and the refugee camp on the Greek island of Samos.

The conflicts in the Middle East – particularly Syria – also affect Cyprus, Greece and Turkey. With almost 4 million refugees admitted, Turkey bears the brunt of the catastrophic situation in Syria. Large numbers of refugees are also arriving in Cyprus and the Greek islands. Switzerland provides support to all three countries in dealing with the challenges this poses.

As head of the FDFA, Mr Cassis will therefore assess the situation himself during this trip. Among other things, he will visit a refugee camp on Samos and discuss the refugee issue with his Cypriot counterpart, Nikos Christodoulides, and President Prokopis Pavlopoulos of Greece. In particular, he will discuss the situation in the wider region with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.

Cyprus question

Another topic covered during this trip is the Cyprus question, which has remained unresolved for decades. In Cyprus Mr Cassis will visit the buffer zone that separates the north and south of the island, where the UNFICYP (the United Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus) is deployed. He will also meet with UN Special Representative Elizabeth Spehar and members of the joint humanitarian Committee on Missing Persons (CMP). The CMP locates, exhumes and identifies persons who have been reported missing since the 1963-64 clashes and the occupation in 1974.

Mr Cassis will also address the Cyprus question at his meetings in Nicosia, Athens and Ankara and discuss the topic of Switzerland's good offices.

Moreover, he will take this opportunity to explain Switzerland's position in relation to the European Union to his counterparts from EU member states Cyprus and Greece.

Ο Υπουργός Εξωτερικών της Ελβετικής Ομοσπονδίας θα πραγματοποιήσει επίσκεψη εργασίας στην Κύπρο, την Ελλάδα και την Τουρκία

Ο Υπουργός Εξωτερικών της Ελβετικής Ομοσπονδίας, κύριος Ignazio Cassis, επισκέπτεται από τις 8 μέχρι τις 12 Ιουλίου 2019 τις δύο χώρες μέλη της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, Κύπρο και Ελλάδα, όπως και την Τουρκία. Εκτός από τις συνομιλίες με τους ομόλογούς του στην Κύπρο και την Τουρκία και την εθιμοτυπική συνάντηση με τον Πρόεδρο της Ελληνικής Δημοκρατίας είναι προγραμματισμένη και μια επίσκεψη στην O.H.E. νεκρή ζώνη στην Κύπρο όπως και στο Κέντρο Υποδοχής και Ταυτοποίησης στη Σάμο.

Οι διαμάχες στη Μέση Ανατολή - ιδιαίτερα στη Συρία - επηρεάζουν επίσης την Κύπρο, την Ελλάδα και την Τουρκία. Πολλοί πρόσφυγες φτάνουν στην Κύπρο και τα ελληνικά νησιά. Η Ελβετία υποστηρίζει και τις δύο χώρες να αντιμετωπίσουν τις προκλήσεις που ανακύπτουν.

Ο Ομοσπονδιακός Σύμβουλος Cassis θα μπορέσει να έχει ιδία γνώση της κατάστασης κατά τη διάρκεια του ταξιδιού του. Θα επισκεφθεί επίσης το Κέντρο Υποδοχής και Ταυτοποίησης στη Σάμο και θα συζητήσει το προσφυγικό με τον Κύπριο ομόλογό του κ. Νίκο Χριστοδουλίδη και τον Πρόεδρο της Ελληνικής Δημοκρατίας κ. Προκόπιο Παυλόπουλο. Ο Ομοσπονδιακός Σύμβουλος Cassis θα συζητήσει ειδικά για την κατάσταση στη Συρία με τον Τούρκο ομόλογό του Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.

Κυπριακό

Ένα άλλο θέμα του ταξιδιού είναι το Κυπριακό ζήτημα, το οποίο δεν έχει επιλυθεί εδώ και δεκαετίες. Στην Κύπρο, ο Ομοσπονδιακός Σύμβουλος Cassis θα επισκεφθεί τη UNFICYP στη νεκρή ζώνη μεταξύ του βορρά και του νότου του νησιού. Θα συναντηθεί επίσης με την Ειδική Απεσταλμένη των Ηνωμένων Εθνών Elizabeth Spehar και μέλη της Διερευνητικής Επιτροπής για τους Αγνοουμένους στην Κύπρο ΔΕΑ (CMP). Το ΔΕΑ εντοπίζει, προχωράει στην εκταφή και ταυτοποιεί αγνοούμενα άτομα από τις συγκρούσεις του 1963-64 και από την κατοχή του 1974.

Ο επικεφαλής του Υπουργείου Εξωτερικών της Ελβετίας θα συζητήσει επίσης το Κυπριακό με τους συνομιλητές του στη Λευκωσία, την Αθήνα και την Άγκυρα και θα κάνει αναφορά στις καλές υπηρεσίες της Ελβετίας. Ο Ομοσπονδιακός Σύμβουλος Cassis θα έχει επίσης την ευκαιρία να εξηγήσει τη θέση της Ελβετίας απέναντι στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση στους συνομιλητές του στις δύο χώρες της ΕΕ, την Κύπρο και την Ελλάδα.
