The Ostrava region is confronted with rather low air quality and is currently experiencing economic and industrial transitions with considerable implications for the local transport system. The project aims to improve safety for public transport users, to enhance the public transport infrastructure of Ostrava and to reduce air pollution. It is foreseen to extend a tram line, to build two connections from the tram to the bus system and to enhance two key tram stops in the city centre also for the needs of handicapped people.

Contesto

The overall project objective is to reverse the current trend of declining public transport patronage in Ostrava by improving safety, comfort and the environmental record of the public transport system. In particular, the Krajsky Urad und Krizikova tram stops have been identified as potentially dangerous for public transport users due to interaction with motorists and are in urgent need of substantial safety upgrades. Besides, the Dopravni Podnik Ostrava aims to reduce atmospheric pollution created by its own vehicles and therefore pursues the strategy of expanding the tram network and mitigating diesel bus operation. Hence, the project aims to improve safety by rebuilding the aforementioned tram stops plus creating a new tram link between Dubina and Vyskovice.

Obiettivi

The goal of the project is to improve and reconfigure tram routes and services which are the most popular means of public transport in the city of Ostrava.

Gruppi target

The direct beneficiary is the public transport company Dopravni Podnik Ostrava which will be supported to improve their public transport infrastructure. The primary target group is the travelling public (2.7 million passengers/year) who will benefit from safer and more comfortable public transport. The situation for people with reduced mobility will be particularly improved through better access possibilities. City residents will also benefit from lower traffic-induced atmospheric pollution.
