Rehabilitation of Egyptian Radiology Services, Phase III
After the successful implementation of the Second Phase, which lasted between 2007 and 2011, a Third Phase to extend the digital radiology services has been initiated. Following activities are planned to reach this objective: the rehabilitation of sites receiving mainly digital radiology services and equipment, the provision of radiology equipment, the assistance for the maintenance and financial sustainability of the radiology technology and the training and capacity building programme for the radiology staff. The implementing agency for this project is the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population. This is a project mixed-financed by Switzerland (50% by SECO, 50% by Swiss banks).

| Contexte |
After the first (2002 ? 2006) and second (2007 - 2011) phases of the Egypt-Swiss Radiology Project (ESRP), a third one was launched to further extend the digital technology capacities in Egypt. Since the early 2000s, digital radiology had already largely replaced conventional technology in industrialised countries. Purchase prices for digital radiology equipment have ever since come down and therefore also became a viable option for low- and middle-income countries. |
| Objectifs |
The objective of the new phase is to expand the digital radiology services in Egypt based on the experiences and lessons learned from the pilot sites for digital radiology introduced in the 2nd Phase. In addition, the Project shall also support and have synergies with the Egyptian national initiative initiated in late 2009, the Picture Archiving and Communication System. |
| Effets à moyen terme |
I. Infrastructure: To introduce digital radiology services in 30 General or District A hospitals. II. Institutional strengthening: To further disseminate standards and guidelines from the first two phases and to adapt and implement the standard practice procedure and management for digital radiology. To ensure long-term quality achievement of ESRP improved service through the implementation of a MoHP-based accreditation scheme. III. Policy dialogue: To consult, review and update the National PACS plans of the MoHP. To improve the financial sustainability, technical efficiency and awareness for costs in providing public radiology services. |
| Résultats |
Principaux résultats attendus: At project completion, it is expected that about 22 radiology departments in selected hospitals shall be renovated and rehabilitated, the equipment maintenance and technology management shall be strenthened and financially sustainable, radiation safety is applied by training measures and supervision schemes. |
