President Alain Berset emphasises importance of ties between Europe and Asia

Press releases, 19.10.2018

At the 12th Asia-Europe Meeting, which concluded on Friday, President Alain Berset emphasised the importance of the partnership between Europe and Asia. Cooperation and ties between the two continents are key factors in strengthening multilateralism around the world. The motto of this year’s ASEM summit in Brussels was ‘Europe and Asia: Global Partners for Global Challenges’.

On the fringes of the summit in Brussels Mr Berset met representatives from participating states and institutions. As well as addressing topics from the summit, the discussions also covered bilateral relations and international affairs.

At a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, both parties commended the good and close relations between Switzerland and Spain. Topics covered included European policy and cooperation between the two countries within the UN. It was the first lengthy discussion with Prime Minister Sánchez, who took up office in June.

During talks with Russian Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev, discussions focused on developing bilateral relations, both in political and economic terms. President Berset explained that it was important to pursue dialogue in all areas of common interest. He also stressed Switzerland’s desire to develop the traditionally good relations between the two countries.

In addition, Mr Berset met Thailand’s Prime Minster Prayut Chan-o-cha, as well as ministers from Bangladesh and Myanmar. ASEM’s members seek to strengthen cooperation between Asia and Europe through dialogue. Switzerland has been a member of this platform for dialogue since 2012. ASEM summits are held every two years, alternating between Europa and Asia.
