Jordan is being affected by several conflicts in the region, has taken in a large number of refugees, while at the same time demonstrating a high degree of political stability. At his meeting with Mr Safadi on 14 May 2018, Mr Cassis will stress the importance of Jordan for Swiss foreign policy and the major role the country plays in the region. The topics of discussion at the bilateral meeting will be the current situation in the region and bilateral relations between Switzerland and Jordan.

On the evening before the meeting, Mr Cassis will take part in the inauguration of the new Swiss embassy building in Amman. In the integrated embassy the political, consular and development cooperation sections will work together under one roof. In addition to political cooperation, Switzerland supports Jordan in managing the refugee crisis, the provision of basic supplies and water management, and in other areas. Working together under one roof will enhance the coherence of Switzerland’s activities and cooperation with Jordan.

After the talks with Mr Safadi, Mr Cassis will travel on 14 May to the Jerash refugee camp in the north-west of Jordan, which is run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). In Jerash he will be accompanied by the UNWRA Commissioner-General, Pierre Krähenbühl, a Swiss national, and will hold a discussion with members of a parliament made up of school students on questions concerning education, training and future prospects.

Mr Cassis will also visit the archaeological site of Petra, the ancient capital of the Nabataean Kingdom. Petra was rediscovered, from a European perspective, at the beginning of the 19th century by the Swiss explorer and orientalist Jean-Louis Burckhardt. Since 1988, archaeologists from the University of Basel have assisted in the research into Petra.
