The Embassy of Switzerland in Singapore takes note of the publication of the Singapore Prison Service's (SPS) annual statistics for 2018, and notes with concern the worrying increase in the number of judicial executions, which have risen from 8 in 2017 to 13 in 2018. The Embassy further notes that a majority of the cases (11) are related to drugs offences.

Switzerland calls on all retentionist countries, including Singapore, to adopt a moratorium on all executions. Today, more than two thirds of the countries of the world have abolished the death penalty in law or practice which confirms a global trend.

Switzerland holds a principled position against the death penalty and is opposed to the use of capital punishment under any circumstances. No compelling evidence exists to show that the death penalty serves as a deterrent to crime more efficient than imprisonment. Furthermore, any errors - inevitable in any legal system - are irreversible.

Switzerland will continue supporting the universal trend towards the eradication of the death penalty.
