1 August 2015: Swiss military band plays in south-eastern Europe

The Swiss Confederation will celebrate its 2015 National Day with Swiss nationals living in south-eastern Europe. At the initiative of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and the Chief of the Armed Forces, Lt Gen André Blattmann, a small ensemble of 15 players from the Swiss Military Band, will provide the musical background for festivities at the embassies in Greece, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia and Kosovo.



Swiss-Greek Talks on Deepening Cooperation on Taxation

Switzerland and Greece have resumed tax discussions

Today in Athens, State Secretary Jacques de Watteville and the Greek Minister of State Nikos Pappas resumed the discussions on unresolved tax issues which had been suspended a year ago. Switzerland and Greece wish to strengthen cooperation to combat tax crime. Within this framework, both sides discussed particularly the preparation of the planned automatic exchange of information from 2017/2018.

Peace through dialogue: OSCE receives Munich Security Conference award for its contribution to peace and stability in Europe

On Saturday evening, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) received this year's Ewald von Kleist Award. The award is given by the Munich Security Conference to honour outstanding contributions to international peace and conflict resolution. In his acceptance speech on behalf of the OSCE Troika, Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter emphasised the importance of continuity in the OSCE's work.

WTO Ministers in Davos back efforts to conclude Doha Round negotiations

At the invitation of Federal Councillor Johann N. Schneider-Ammann, Ministers in charge of WTO affairs and WTO Director-General Roberto Azevêdo met today in Davos. The purpose of the informal gathering was to discuss the negotiating agenda for 2015 in view of a conclusion of the Doha Round.


Greek president Karolos Papoulias in Bern on official visit

On Switzerland's invitation, the president of the Hellenic Republic visited the country on 2 May for the first time since diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Greece began 119 years ago. President of the Swiss Confederation, Mr Didier Burkhalter, and President Karolos Papoulias primarily discussed bilateral relations between the two countries and topics concerning European policy. Greece has held the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union since the beginning of the year which will last until the end of June. Against this backdrop, Mr Burkhalter talked about the Federal Council's intended next steps regarding relations between Switzerland and the EU. The vice-president of the Federal Council, Simonetta Sommaruga (FDJP), the Greek deputy foreign minister, Dimitris Kourkoulas, and the Greek minister of tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, also took part in the meeting.
