The Soviet oppression of the Hungarian Rebellion in 1956, forced around 200'000 people into emigration. The Hungarian Revolution unleashed an unprecedented wave of solidarity in Switzerland: Taking account of the population, one of the highest quotas was accepted by Switzerland with 12'462 refugees. Considered as one of the most distinctive event of the post- war, this event still continues to shape the relations between Hungary and Switzerland today.

The Embassy of Switzerland in Hungary hosted on November 18, 2015, a reception for the young researchers who participated in the Sciex Fellowship Program. From a budget of 4 million Swiss Francs the Sciex Program has financed over 60 Hungarian fellowships for research stays in Swiss research teams for a period up to two years.

The 31 member countries accepted today Switzerland's candidacy for the chairmanship of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) in 2017. The Federal Council had supported this candidacy on the proposal of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). During its chairmanship in 2017, the FDFA will continue to work closely on this issue with the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education and with organisations that are active in Switzerland in promoting human rights.
