Odisha electricity regulator approves small biomass-based gasifier plant to feed into low transmission grid at the village level

In a pioneering decision, the Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC) has permitted a 25kW biomass-based generator to supply electricity to two villages in Bisamcuttack block of Rayagada district through the existing low transmission network of the Southern Distribution Company. For the first time, the power plant will be connected to an existing 220V distribution network by feeding in at the transformer level.

Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) supported designing templates for energy-efficient public buildings
The Indo-Swiss Building Energy Efficiency Project (BEEP), in collaboration with the state government, launched the Guidelines for Energy-Efficient and Thermally Comfortable Public Buildings in Karnataka. The guidelines provide a step by step approach to designing energy efficient public buildings. They have been developed keeping in mind the different climatic regions found in Karnataka.

A 30kWe capacity two-stage biomass power gasifier was inaugurated on September 16, 2016 in Satna, Madhya Pradesh. The gasifier power plant was inaugurated by Mrs. Mamta Pandey, Mayor of Satna, together with Ms. Mirjam Macchi, Programme Officer at the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), and Mr. B. B. Singh, Mission Director of the Madhya Pradesh State Bamboo Mission.

The new office building of the Climate Change and Development Division incorporates several innovative features. In order to make it showcase of energy and resource efficiency, automated external moveable blinds and double glazed windows were installed, the roof and wall were insulated and a new low carbon cement type was used for the outer walls.

Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg, the Swiss co-founders and pilots of Solar Impulse-an idea born in Switzerland, along with their Partners, have revealed the detailed global flight route of Solar Impulse 2 (Si2). The first solar-powered plane able to fly day and night will land in 12 locations across the world, including two in India-Ahmedabad and Varanasi and travel 35,000 kilometres in the first attempt to fly around the globe without using a drop of fuel. For pilots Piccard and Borschberg, the drive behind their mission is to demonstrate how clean technologies and a pioneering spirit can change the world.

Ten years after the devastating tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed more than 225,000 people, rendered millions homeless and caused massive destruction in 13 countries, various events will take place to remember the disaster of 26 December 2004. Switzerland will take part in memorial ceremonies in Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and India. The 2004 tsunami claimed the lives of 113 Swiss nationals. Switzerland supported the emergency aid and reconstruction efforts within the framework of the Swiss Confederation's Humanitarian Aid.

The “Sustainable Recycling Industries” programme (SRI) was launched in India at the Waste Management Summit in Mumbai on 16 December 2014. The SRI is a 4-year global programme which will be active in India, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, South Afr...ica, Egypt and Ghana. In India, the main focus of the programme is on plastic recycling, particularly on recycling of hazardous waste materials, and the development of local life cycle inventories.
