Low Carbon Cement (LCC) - Phase 3 (Exit Phase)

15.09.2020 - 30.11.2022

Cement production contributes significantly to global warming. This phase aims at the commercial deployment of a new cement type (LC3) which emits 15-30% less CO2 compared to standard cements. LC3 was extensively researched by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) with partners in Cuba and India. Industrial deployment will be achieved through commercial production and application by the construction sector mainly in India and Latin America with support of the project.

Strengthening State Strategies for Climate Actions (3SCA)

01.01.2020 - 31.12.2025

Responding to the Government of India’s request for Swiss expertise in disaster risk reduction and water resource management in mountain ecosystems, the project will support the Himalayan States of Uttarakhand and Sikkim to improve resilience against climate change in these sectors. Through relevant Government institutions, the project will build capacities for replication of project inter-ventions in the 12 Himalayan States, support policy uptake and share results regionally and globally.

Capacity Building for Low Carbon and Climate Resilient City Development in India (CapaCITIES)

16.07.2019 - 30.06.2024

India is rapidly urbanizing. The growing Indian cities are affected by climate change but are also important emitters of greenhouse gases. Phase 2 of CapaCITIES aims at enabling climate responsive urban planning in eight cities and two states. Swiss expertise in waste management, transport, water and climate finance will support development of solutions for low-carbon and climate resilient cities. The results of the project in India will be shared through global reporting mechanisms and city coalitions.

Remote sensing-based Information and Insurance for Crops in Emerging economies (RIICE) - Phase 3

01.08.2018 - 31.08.2022

Extreme weather events increasingly affect small-scale producers in Asia. Satellites and other information technologies present tremendous potential for improved country-wide monitoring of crop growth and insurance solutions for extreme weather events. With RIICE, SDC supports the integration of expertise from Swiss private actors and international public research centres toward modernizing public agricultural services and crop insurance programmes, offering performant solutions to Governments and producers to cope with production shortfalls.

Clean Air Project in India (CAP India)

01.07.2018 - 30.09.2024

India is one of the most severely affected countries by air pollution in the world. This project will respond to a demand for support raised in India’s new National Clean Air Programme, with the aim to improve air quality with co-benefits on public health, environment and climate change. Capacity building and technical assistance through Swiss expertise will support data measurement and analysis, city level clean air action plans and awareness raising campaigns to take precautionary measures and mitigate air pollution.

Clean Energy Policy (CEP)

01.06.2018 - 29.02.2020

India has put forth an ambitious plan for decarbonisation of its economy as part of the post 2020 Nationally Determined Contribution under Paris Climate Agreement. The achievement of these targets needs development of appropriate energy transition in the coming two years (2018-19). This single-phase project will support the Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation to setup a Platform which will deliberate on the energy choices and solutions.

Indo-Swiss Collaboration in Biotechnology (ISCB)

01.11.2017 - 30.11.2019

The Indo-Swiss Collaboration on Biotechnology is a long-standing (over 40 years) agricultural research cooperation between Switzerland and India. It aims to develop products (seed varieties, cultivation techniques) that respond to the needs of India’s smallholder farmers. Currently, four networks of Indian and Swiss institutions are researching on biofertilizer and –irrigation, finger millet, pigeon pea and cassava. A final phase will allow them to finalize their research, and give space to properly document the partnership and develop knowledge products.

Indo-Swiss Programme on Building Energy Efficiency (BEEP)

01.10.2017 - 30.06.2024

Globally buildings account for 35% of energy use and about 20% of GHG emissions. In India, buildings even consume 40% of all energy and cause 40% of CO2 emissions. Phase 2 of BEEP has shown that 30-45% of energy savings are possible in India with marginal additional costs compared to the current way of constructing. Based on the achievements of the previous phase, Phase 3 will focus on mainstreaming and scaling-up energy efficient and thermally comfortable building design and on promoting the on-site use of renewable energy sources.

Low Carbon Cement (LCC)

01.06.2017 - 15.09.2020

In the production of cement, CO2 is emitted through fossil fuel combustion and through a chemical reaction of the raw materials. Because cement is used widely as a construction material, its production contributes significantly to global warming. In Phase 1 of the project, EPFL in collaboration with partner institutions in Cuba and India conducted extensive research on a new cement type (LC3) which emits 10-30% less CO2 emissions compared to commercially available cements. Phase 2 of the project aims at preparing the grounds for large-scale production of the new cement by the industry, with a particular focus on India and Cuba.

Indian Himalayas Climate Adaptation Programme

01.01.2016 - 31.03.2021

The sensitivity of the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) to changes in global climate has been recognised and given priority by the Government of India. However, knowledge and scientific information on climate change impacts on the IHR is still limited and capacities to adapt are weak. The Indian Himalayas Climate Adaptation Programme (IHCAP) aims at bridging the knowledge gap on climate change impacts and response measures by supporting collaborative research, capacity building and knowledge exchange and dissemination.

Capacity Building for Low Carbon and Climate Resilient City Development in India (CapaCITIES)

01.10.2014 - 31.05.2019

India is rapidly urbanising. The growing Indian cities are increasingly affected by climate change. At the same time, they are becoming important sources of greenhouse gas emissions. of the project CapaCITIES aims at enabling climate responsive urban planning in four partner cities, supporting sectoral measures for adapting to the effects of climate change and for reducing greenhouse gas emissions as well as fostering knowledge exchange and dissemination.

Strengthening State Strategies for Climate Actions (3SCA)

01.01.2014 - 31.10.2020

India recently approved State level Actions Plans to address Climate Change (SAPCCs). However, institutional capacities for implementing these plans are weak. Through this project, the Global Programme Climate Change (GPCC) will support the operationalisation of SAPCCs in three states in India (Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Madhya Pradesh) by strengthening capacities in planning and implementing relevant climate actions across select sectors including water, disaster management, forest and energy.
