Bilateral trade between Switzerland and Indonesia continues to grow steadily. In 2025, total trade reached CHF 5.2 billion. Switzerland’s main exports to Indonesia include machinery, chemical products and pharmaceuticals, while its principal imports include gold, textiles and agricultural products.
Indonesia is also one of the most important destinations for Swiss direct investment in Asia. Around 150 Swiss companies are currently active in the country. According to Indonesian sources, recorded Swiss foreign direct investment in Indonesia has reached USD 3.5 billion since 2010, placing Switzerland among the country’s top three European investors.
The Joint Economic and Trade Commission, established in 2009, provides a platform for regular bilateral dialogue on trade, investment and broader economic issues.
In 2018, Switzerland, together with the other EFTA member states, signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with Indonesia. Following its approval in a Swiss popular referendum, the agreement entered into force in November 2021.
A bilateral investment treaty, in force since 1 August 2024, provides Swiss and Indonesian investors with reciprocal protection and greater legal certainty. It replaced the previous agreement, which expired in 2016.
Switzerland and Indonesia have also strengthened their cooperation in the minerals and metals sector through a Memorandum of Understanding that entered into force on 16 July 2026.
The Embassy of Switzerland in Indonesia also hosts the Swiss Business Hub and Switzerland Tourism, further supporting bilateral economic and tourism relations.
