The COVID-19 epidemic is monopolising the time and efforts of countless experts and policymakers. Many of the specialists expected at the Montreux summit are currently busy managing the crisis in their own countries. In the circumstances, the Federal Department of Home Affairs, having notified the World Health Organization (WHO), has decided to postpone the 5th Ministerial Summit on Patient Safety. The Federal Council was informed of the decision at its meeting on 19 February. Postponing the event will also allow time to learn from how the epidemic is being managed and to assess the effectiveness of the measures taken in different countries.

The Global Ministerial Summit on Patient Safety, which has been held every year since 2016, brings together policy-makers and experts with the aim of improving patient safety. For the 5th summit, Federal Councillor Alain Berset had invited WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, health ministers and international experts to debate the measures required to promote patient safety.
