Mr. Dieter Sommerhalder, Honorary Consul General of Switzerland, represented the Kansai Consular Corps (KCC) in a New Year party at Portopia Hotel in Kobe City on 4 January 2019.  The party was jointly organized by the Hyogo Prefectural Government, the Kobe City Government, the Kobe Chamber of Commerce & Industry and other local economic organizations and associations in Hyogo/Kobe.

Mr. Sommerhalder made a speech both in English and Japanese, which was very favorably welcomed by about 1,600 attendants including the Honourable Toshizo Ido, Governor of Hyogo Prefecture, the Honourable Kizo Hisamoto, Mayor of Kobe City, and Mr. Hisashi Ietsugu, Chairman of the Kobe Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI).

Following the speech, Mr. Sommerhalder joined a sake cask opening ceremony with Governor Ido, Mayor Hisamoto and KCCI Chairman Ietsugu on stage.  The area called Nada in Kobe City is one of the places where excellent sake is produced, and the city has an ordinance that local sake should be used for proposing a toast, especially on official occasions.

Hyogo Prefecture celebrated the 150th anniversary of its inauguration in 2018, and the City of Kobe celebrates the 130th anniversary of its municipalization this year.  Having a close relationship with and supported by those local authorities, KCC marked the 150th anniversary last year.
