Switzerland and Japan enjoy close ties of friendship and share common values and objectives. Bilateral parliamentary visits have fostered close ties on the legislative level too, whereby the two countries’ parliamentary friendship groups serve as a valuable platform for dialogue. To further strengthen these bilateral and parliamentary relations, the President of the Swiss Council of States, Mr. Raphaël Comte, visited Japan from October 30 to November 6.

Mr. Comte started his visit in Tokyo, where he met with the President of the Japanese House of Councilors, Mr. Chuichi Date. Mr. Comte and Mr. Date reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the traditional friendship between Japan and Switzerland and cooperating closely within the framework of the Olympic Games 2020 in Tokyo.  Mr. Comte also invited his counterpart to visit Switzerland. In addition, Mr. Comte met with members of the Japan-Switzerland Parliamentarians’ Friendship League – including its President Mr. Seishiro Eto – whom Mr. Comte had received in Switzerland two months previously.

Mr. Comte then travelled to Nara, whose 2015 Friendship Agreement with Bern is the first between a Japanese prefecture and a Swiss canton. Mr. Comte met with the Governor of Nara Prefecture, Mr. Shogo Arai, who will visit Bern this month, and attended a seminar on the political and economic system of Switzerland.

Mr. Comte continued his journey to Hiroshima, where he visited the Peace Memorial Museum and Park and laid a wreath at the cenotaph. Subsequently, Mr. Comte met with the Mayor of Hiroshima city, Mr. Kazumi Matsui.  Mr. Matsui has been strongly committed to the network “Mayors for Peace”, an international organization of cities dedicated to the promotion of peace and denuclearization, in which more than twenty Swiss towns and municipalities participate too.
