Disaster Risk Education in Public Schools (Jordania/Lebanon)
The project takes a regional approach and is an ideal continuation of previous projects. While focusing on DRR in schools, it offers an avenue to explore community-based DRR. In addition, the project’s hazard mapping can serve as a basis for the prioritization of schools with regard to future activities such as retrofitting, for which there is interest from larger donors. In Lebanon, the United States Agency for International Development will provide funds for the public education sector during a 5 year program which comprises the rehabilitation of public school buildings in the value of USD 33 million. Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation meets regularly and shares the scope of its work with other donors. The ongoing project for the rehabilitation and retrofitting of two public school structures in South Lebanon will serve as a model for the future restoration and rehabilitation of public schools in Lebanon.
