32’000 Syrian refugee students are currently enrolled in Jordanian public schools according to UNICEF. With the conflict in Syria and the influx of refugees the number of students is expected to rise. The already overstretched Ministry of Education (MoE) is struggling to accommodate more students in the schools. As a burden sharing with Jordan, SDC is supporting non-structural rehabilitation works of 11 public schools in Amman area and the Northern governorates where Syrian refugee students are also enrolled. The project will be supplemented with a component on awareness campaign and a further component in which SDC supports the MoE with the integration of an IT management program.

The protective and child/student friendly educational environment for Jordanian and Syrian refugee children in selected schools is improved and the coping mechanism of the MoE to receive more students, particularly Syrian refugee students, is strengthened.

11’800 Jordanian and Syrian students (61% boys and 39% girls) will enjoy a better educational environment.

The capacity of public schools to accommodate more students is increased. The destruction of the school premises - caused by the students - has decreased in the selected schools. MoE capacities to deliver services are strengthened through improved IT management programs and training.

Principaux résultats antérieurs:  

SDC funded the rehabilitation and expansion of 10 school buildings as well as the provision of furniture and an IT school maintenance software program. The achievements: The capacity of the schools was increased and additional students mainly Syrians refugee children were enrolled. The learning environment and safety at the selected schools were improved through the rehabilitation of the WASH facilities and the electricity network.
