Water for Livestock in Garissa and Isiolo Counties, Northern Kenya

Project completed

The context of arid zones in Kenya calls for a greater emphasis on preventive approaches and drought risk management both on local and regional scales. Background

The context of arid zones in Kenya calls for a greater emphasis on preventive approaches and drought risk management both on local and regional scales. Surface water facilities, provided by low cost systems with simple maintenance alongside rangeland management are a key element of water supply for livestock and drought resilience in North Kenya where more than 80% of the population are pastoralists.

Objectives

The main objective of this project is to improve livelihood and resilience against drought for targeted communities in North Eastern Kenya and support the recharge of the Merti aquifer which (main underground source of water of Lagdera district including Dadaab refugee camp)

Target groups

Indirectly, the project will benefit the whole 3 districts (Population 162'773) and the counties of Garissa and lsiolo in terms of water and rangeland awareness. 7 targeted communities (22'976 people - including 1 0'633 women) are the direct beneficiaries. 58 individuals at least (25 females) will participate to the trainings and 2'460 pastoralists (934 females) will be engaged in the Cash for Work schemes.

Medium-term outcomes

  • Increased access to balanced water and grazing areas for livestock in targeted areas of Garissa and lsiolo counties
  • Improve awareness and capacity in sustainable water and rangeland management in the targeted communities and at district and county level
  • In Lagdera (Garissa county), the project will contribute to release the pressure on the Merti Aquifer by favoring its recharge.
