UNICEF - WASH Capacity Building Programme
The objective of the cooperation between SDC and UNICEF is to strengthen the capacity of Ministry of City Management (MoCM) in planning and implementing rural water supply and sanitation programmes in an equitable and sustainable manner. This will be achieved by strengthening their technical capacity in the areas of water sector assessment, use of alternate technologies and improving their capacity in water and sanitation system design and construction supervision.

- Roll out water supply situation assessment survey in 30 counties throughout DPR Korea
- “WASH for All” water sanitation facilities for all families in rural areas in 2-3 Ris (counties) in target Provinces
- 200 engineers/technicians from 10 provinces trained in feasibility studies and system design
- Outcome 1: Policy level Complete the nationwide rollout of water supply assessment survey in 30 counties, data entry, data analysis and assessment report with the involvement of international agencies as an observer during field data collection.
- Outcome 2: WASH for all Complete “WASH for All pilot projects” in 2 -3 counties ensuring access to safe water sources and improved sanitation for 100% of the inhabitants by using various alternate technologies in both water and sanitation activities.
- Outcome 3: Capacity building of MoCM A minimum of 200 county engineers/ technicians from counties across 10 provinces received feasibility study and design trainings on rural water supply system.

| Hintergrund |
According to Census 2008, nationwide 22% people above the age of 15 years (more than 40% households in the country - 55% rural and 35% urban) are involved in collecting water, often from unprotected sources. The Government has confirmed that the majority of the water systems in the country are too old and do not function efficiently with widespread leakage and there has been no investment in water sector thus decreasing the coverage with the increased number of population. Government has also realised the need for accurate data and hence has agreed to conduct an assessment survey in the water sector in 2012 – 2015. |

| Resultate |
Resultate von früheren Phasen: UNICEF supported MoCM in developing tools and plans to implement a status assessment survey (inventory) of existing water supply facilities in two counties. The assessment included all facilities (piped systems, tube wells with hand pumps, dug wells, springs, river, stream, pond, etc.) in use in the pilot counties at all levels (cooperative farms and villages, ri centres, and county towns) so that a clear understanding of water situation in the counties could be established. The assessment was carried out in two phases; phase I for developing tools and methodologies and phase II for field data collection, data analysis and preparation of an assessment report with recommendation for nationwide rollout of similar assessments. Activities under phase I were completed in Spring 2012 and the final report was released in November 2012. |
