Federal Councillor and Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs Didier Burkhalter met today in Seoul with South Korean President Park Geun-hye. Their meeting underscored the close relations between the two countries. During his meeting with Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se, Mr Burkhalter discussed bilateral relations, regional security matters and the situation in the Korean peninsula.

Didier Burkhalter, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, will take part in the "Shangri-La Dialogue" at the Asia Security Summit from 29 to 31 May 2015 in Singapore and, on 1 June 2015, he will co-chair together with South Korea the Asian conference of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). He will then travel on to Vietnam where, among other things, he will open the new Swiss consulate general in Ho Chi Minh City. He will have bilateral talks in all three states.

At the World Water Forum in the South Korean city of Gyeongbuk, the participating countries have today adopted a declaration defining political priorities for the efficient use of water, a resource that is in short supply. Switzerland, which has also adopted the declaration and was heavily involved in drafting it, will be lobbying during the World Water Forum to get the responsible use of water resources included on the agenda for sustainable development after 2015 (post-2015 agenda).

From 15 to 16 April 2014, a Swiss delegation headed by the SDC director-general, Martin Dahinden, will take part in the first high-level meeting of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation. The participants will discuss progress achieved in the implementation of the measures determined in 2011 in the South Korean city of Busan to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of development cooperation. At the meeting Switzerland will advocate in particular for greater ownership on the part of the individual partner countries, a more results-oriented approach, comprehensive partnerships, transparency, and mutual accountability.

On Monday, 20 January 2014, the president of the Confederation, Didier Burkhalter, received his South Korean counterpart, Park Geun-hye, in Bern for a two-day state visit. During the visit, Switzerland and the Republic of Korea signed several documents with the aim of strengthening bilateral cooperation in the areas of social insurance, the economy, health care and research, as well as institutionalising their political dialogue. Three other Federal Councillors took part in the talks conducted by the two presidents.

On invitation by the Federal Council, the president of the Republic of Korea will pay a state visit to Switzerland from 20 to 21 January 2014. Talks will centre on political, economic and scientific cooperation, as well as current international issues such as climate change and sustainable development. Various documents aimed at deepening bilateral relations will also be signed.

Article - Representatives of Poland, Sweden and Switzerland, Member States of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission (NNSC) in Korea, met in Stockholm on the 9th of April 2013 for their yearly consultations. Discussions focused on recent regional tensions and their impact on NNSC activities and allowed for an evaluation of NNSC’s expanded tasks and cooperation with its partners. This year’s 60th commemoration of the armistice agreement, and thus of the NNSC, was also highlighted in the consultations. The NNSC Member States reasserted their long-term commitment to contribute to a permanent peace solution on the Korean Peninsula.

On 11 February 2013, the Swiss Confederation and the Republic of Korea will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. Today, the relationship between the two countries is characterized by increasingly intensive contacts and a growing volume of trade. The year 2013 will furthermore mark yet another jubilee: 60 years of Swiss presence and peace-policy commitment on the inner-Korean border.
