Country/region Period Budget
01.11.2015 - 31.12.2020
CHF 9'600'000
Background While about 65% of the urban population in Kosovo is connected to the sewage network, only one small wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for a capacity of about 10’000 Population Equivalents (PE) is operated in Kosovo. Another is being built currently in Prizren. Therefore, the vast majority of wastewater remains untreated and is discharged directly into rivers severely affecting the water quality, human health and environment. There is little awareness of the situation in the population and until now, there have been only limited investments into infrastructure for wastewater collection and treatment.
Objectives The overall goals of the project are the improvement of the living conditions of the population in Peja (ca. 60'000 inhabitants) and in the downstream localities in Kosovo and further downstream in Albania and the protection of surface and underground water resources. The project will also contribute to the overall economic development of the target region.
Medium-term outcomes The outcomes are as follows:Access to improved sanitation / access to adequate wastewater treatment services at socially affordable and acceptable price-The Peja Regional Water Company Hidrodrini (RWCH) is a modern and efficiently operating company-Functioning and adequate institutional and regulatory framework.

Expected results:   Investment measures: - Rehabilitation of the sewage network- Construction of a main transmission line to the envisaged WWTP- Construction of a WWTP- Supply of a flushing truckAccompanying measures: - Corporate development measures - Public relations measures- Policy dialogue / regulatory aspects measures
