Excessive water use leads to the depletion and pollution of this vital resource. In a significant paradigm shift, the Kyrgyz authorities are planning to enhance the protection of water resources by promoting a rational use through strong regulatory functions. Switzerland is partnering with the Kyrgyz authorities in the establishment and the institutionalization of such functions, by supporting the introduction of a water use permitting system that will enable a proper supervision of quantity and quality parameters.
Effective management and prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases

Kyrgyzstan faces an increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases and there are significant gaps in the health system to manage them. The Primary Health Care system should deliver equitable care and prevent hospitalizations with non-communicable diseases’ complications. The project contributes to Improve health and quality of life of the rural population through replicating the model of primary health care strengthening and promoting healthy behaviour among people in southern regions and two big cities.

Central Asia: Gender and DRR Study 2022

This study will focus on understanding the relevance and influence of gender dynamics on Disaster Risk Management (DRM) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) measures in Central Asia. It aims to garner practical insights that are useful to rendering Switzerland's and partners' work in the areas of DRM more gender-sensitive, and to explore the potential for DRM activities to have a gender-transformative impact in order to inform sustainable humanitarian and development interventions.

«Bai Alai» Small Business and Income Creation in Alai and Chon-Alai

Alai and Chon Alai are two of the poorest regions in Kyrgyzstan. The project aims at increasing economic inclusion of producing households through increased income and employment, with the focus on women and youth. During this exit phase (III) the project capitalizes and disseminates good practices in apiculture and cattle, and continues activities handicraft and tourism value chains, until phasing out in May 2024.
Araket for better life in new settlements

Residents of the new settlements are the most vulnerable and are largely invisible to state support. Due to lack of legal status in their place of residence and lack of awareness, these residents have limited access to public services. Switzerland decided to support these left-behind population by raising awareness of their rights, providing access to public services, involving local governments in improving living conditions, creating economic opportunities for women and thus reducing their vulnerabilities.
Contribution to the OSCE Academy in Bishkek

In Central Asia, the OSCE Academy offers a unique platform to train the youth in governance, economic policy, and security topics, as well as to foster open and constructive debate on regional security, development, and interconnectedness. This Swiss contribution will support the Academy in becoming and staying a leading institution for higher education and research, offering graduate and postgraduate programs that are supported by and connected to various research projects.

Rural Communities’ Disaster Risks and Climate Change Resilience

In the natural disasters prone environment of Kyrgyzstan, most vulnerable to such risks are the rural communities. In the frame of its Country Strategic Plans (CSP), the World Food Programme (WFP) strengthens their disaster risk and climate change resilience. The Swiss contribution to this intervention line/pillar of the CSP will magnify its impact via implementing a more comprehensive approach and increasing the number of direct beneficiaries.
Medical Education Reform

The project is improving the quality of health services through well-trained health professionals. The exit phase will strengthen professional associations, modernize nursing education and establish an independent competency assessment centre. The Ministry of Health and Social Development delegated the competency development and assessment role to the Professional Associations, which are the key partners to implement the project’s interventions.
Cryospheric Observation and Modelling for improved Adaptation in Central Asia (CROMO-ADAPT)

Climate change in Central Asia mountain regions will have significant impacts on water availability and occurrence of natural hazards. This project strengthens the glacier, snow and permafrost monitoring systems and capacities in Central Asia, develops user-oriented climate information services, and supports the planning of adaptation measures to increase resilience to climate change. The project builds on Swiss expertise in monitoring and adaptation in alpine water and disaster risk management.

Sustainable Economic Development: ph. 02

In the southern provinces of Kyrgyzstan, many households are still excluded from economic activities and depend on remittances. The current Covid-19 pandemic further weakens these families. The project will improve the quality of agricultural products and develop new market opportunities to increase the resilience of target groups. Best practices from phase 1 will be scaled up to other regions.
Facilitating Safe and Skilled Migration on the Central Asia - Kazakhstan Corridor

Labor migration within Central Asia and targeted countries of destination, in particular to Kazakhstan constitutes a lifeline for millions of families in Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. However informality and poor regulation negatively affect potential development benefits. The program aims at enhancing labor mobility governance along the Central Asia-Kazakhstan migration corridor while supporting the governments of the region to facilitate reintegration and encourage the diversification of countries of destination. By strengthening pre-departure orientation and skills-matching interventions for prospective migrant workers, it will foster migrant workers’ protection and enhance livelihood perspectives for the poorest in Central Asia. The program builds on Swiss migration expertise and increases the potential of migration for development.

The project strengthens the health management system by modernizing continuous skills development and by updating regulations towards a transparent and competency based appointment as well as performance assessment of health managers.
