Poverty Alleviation in Remote Upland Areas (PARUA)

PARUA is addressing poverty and food security of uplands ethnic communities in Lao PDR. It is aiming at supporting Prai villages, which belong to most marginalized and vulnerable ethnic poor. PARUA 3 will strengthen the capacity of government at local levels and the Prai people to establish improved pre-conditions for sustainable development through different modalities of public/private partnerships and private initiatives. By funding PARUA project, SDC has gained a strong understanding of the complexity of ethnic groups dynamics.

In Lao PDR, it is crucial that investments on land are appropriately planned and managed for the sustainability of the country’s natural capital and its capacity to adapt to climate change, and for ensuring that the livelihoods of the poor and vulnerable are improved and not harmed by unaccounted social and environmental investment impacts. UNDP/UNEP Poverty-Environment Initiative program phase II will strengthen capacity of central and provincial authorities to integrate poverty and environment criteria in development planning.

Integrated Water Management of the Lower Mekong Basin

The Mekong River holds immense economic, social, ecological, and cultural importance. An estimated forty million people, living in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Vietnam, rely on the river to support their agriculture and fisheries. In 2011, SDC reinstated its support to the Mekong River Commission (MRC), an inter-governmental institution, to contribute to equitable development and environmental protection in the Lower Mekong Basin.
