UNHCR: Contribution to Lebanon SGBV activities 2013 [PRO]

Project completed

In response to the high prevalence of violence among Syrian displaced women and girls in Lebanon, which result in various psychosocial symptoms impacting especially women and their family members, the need for more focus and more comprehensive Sexual- and Gender-based Violence (SGBV) services, including shelter services, were identified. The United Nations Refugee Agency UNHCR has been addressing these issues and striving to cope with the continuous emerging protection needs of especially women and young people.

Background

Unrest in Syria since March 2011 has resulted in a regional humanitarian crisis and the displacement of over 2 million Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries. Risks and incidence of SGBV have increased as a result of forced displacement, separation of families, limited access to support and economic opportunities as well as difficult living conditions in informal settlements with minimal privacy and compromised safety. To date, partners have recorded reports of sexual violence and exploitation, domestic violence, honour killings and harmful coping mechanisms such as child/forced marriage and survival sex associated with increased trafficking of people.

Objectives

To enhance protection services for host communities and refugees, especially women and girls, in Lebanon.

Target groups

Syrian refugees (particularly women and girls) at risk, including Palestine refugees from Syria and vulnerable Lebanese

Medium-term outcomes

Refugees and Lebanese women and girls have increased access to safe spaces and economic strengthening activities. All survivors of SGBV access immediate, safe and multi-sectoral services through ethical referrals and quality case management. Negative coping mechanisms and risks to SGBV are mitigated through mobilization of decision-makers and community mediation initiatives. Key Governmental stakeholders are better equipped to prevent and respond to SGBV at national and sub-national level
