| Background |
The continuing influx of Syrian refugees in 2013 has put considerable strain on the education public system, and projections by end 2013 indicate that the number of school-aged children displaced trom Syria to Lebanon will reach 550,000. Public schools have capacity for 300,000 students. Serious support is required if the system is to double its effort. Even then, it will not absorb all children. Since the beginning of the crisis UNICEF has been involved in supporting access to formal and non-formal education. Until June 2013 it reached 31% of targeted children. The government and humanitarian partners have highlighted the need to provide additional classrooms, rehabilitate substandard premises, support teacher training and running costs related to integrating extra students. |
