Community Forums - Exit Phase

The Community Forum instrument has been introduced as a mechanism for citizen participation in decision making at local level, thus fulfilling an institutional gap in the context of good governance in the country. The concept was developed through several phases and was applied in two third of the Macedonian municipalities. To foster sustainability the exit phase focuses on independently organised Forums and on the knowhow transfer to the municipalities association.


Restoration of the Strumica River Basin

As a continuation of the support to the Macedonian water and nature sector, Switzerland developed a group of projects that will assist the country to have cleaner water and a healthier environment, as well as to move forward in meeting its obligations towards the EU. Through this project, Citizens and farmers in the Strumica river basin will benefit from improved economic wellbeing as a result of a better ecological status of the river basin and reduced flooding hazards.


Empowering Municipal Councils

Municipal Council Members play a significant role in the decentralized democracy in Macedonia. However they lack knowledge, information and independence from the executive government. Through specific trainings and peer learning, councillors will gain in knowledge which will lead to their empowerment and increased independence from political party interference in local matters. Consequently the empowered councillors will ensure that policies and budgets reflect citizens‘ needs expressed in a participatory manner.

Integration of Environmental Education in Macedonian Education System

The Environmental Education programme relates strongly to all other SDC and SECO water projects in Macedonia, since it contributes to awareness raising and increased interest for better and healthier environment. It is expected that the school children and their parents will be more sensitive on the environmental issues and will demand from the institutions in charge to address these issues in more effective way.

Swiss Contribution to the European Endowment for Democracy

Initiated by Poland and launched by the EU with the financial support of a number of European countries, the European Endowment for Democracy intends to promote democracy by supporting "agents of change" in the bordering countries of the EU in the East and in the South. Switzerland is represented in the Board of Governors and supports the endowment with a contribution of 1 million CHF earmarked for grants provided by the European Endowment for Democracy to projects.

Lugano Summer School - Support for health professionals and managers from Low- and Middle-Income Countries with a SOC health focus

Empowering the workforce at all levels and within each of the building blocks of the health system through training is mandatory for improving health system performance. Therefore the goal of the of the Lugano Summer School is to strengthen and sustain the capacity of health professionals in selected low and middle income countries to manage, develop and promote health services and health systems at conceptual, strategic, and operational levels.

Contribution to the programme of Solidar Suisse (Est)

Solidar Switzerland’s cooperation engagement contributes to poverty reduction and respect of human rights. It supports political and economical processes to improve equitable access to resources, labour and power in a globalised world. Special focus is to enhance the decent work agenda and to foster democratic structures. At the same time Solidar undertakes awareness raising and advocacy activities in Switzerland, in order to sensitise the Swiss public on development policy issues.

Die Realisierung der Rechte des Kindes auf Zugang zu relevanter, ganzheitlicher und qualitativ guter Bildung als Voraussetzung für eine gerechte weltweite Entwicklung ist das übergeordnete Ziel der Internationalen Programme der SKP. Bildung ist ein Recht und ein Mittel, um alle anderen Menschenrechte zu verwirklichen. Interkulturelles Verständnis und interkulturelle Kompetenzen sind Schlüsselfaktoren für eine gerechte, friedliche und nachhaltige Entwicklung. Kinder und Jungendliche als grösste Bevölkerungsgruppe sind der wichtigste Hebel für sozialen Wandel undEntwicklung.

Contribution to the programme of Swiss Red Cross (Est)

The SRC’s overall goal is to contribute to healthy and safe living for vulnerable groups and communities. Since access to quality health care services remains a key factor for good health, the SRC promotes both supply and demand side of local health systems. As healthy living also depends on the environment, SRC focuses on health determinants such as water, sanitation, nutrition and health literacy. Adressing risks and disasters, SRC programmes encompass disaster risk reduction measures and foster community resilience.


Regional Program: Scientific Cooperation between Eastern Europe and Switzerland (SCOPES), Institutional Partnerships and Research

Der Schweizerische Nationalfonds setzt das seit 1990 laufende Projekt SCOPES mit Partnern aus Osteuropa und der GUS um. Im Rahmen dieser Zusammenarbeit werden Forschungsinstitutionen aus Partnerländern in ihren Aufgaben unterstützt. Als weiteres Element führen Forschungsteams aus Osteuropa und der Schweiz in gemeinsamen Forschungsprojekten Grundlagenforschung durch. Deren internationale Vernetzung trägt wesentlich dazu bei, qualitativ hochwertige Forschungsresultate nutzbar zu machen.
