Young people who want to live abroad can stay with a family as an au-pair. They are provided with accommodation and meals, plus a small amount of pocket money, in return for helping in the household and looking after the children. Attending a language school is an integral part of an au-pair arrangement. Au-pairing is intended for people between the ages of 18 and 27 (in some cases, up to 30). Specialised agencies mediate host families and take care of the associated formalities. For North America, a special visa is required, while in Europe an identification card or passport, plus a written invitation from the host family, is normally sufficient. France also requires a medical certificate.
