Switzerland prioritises prevention and preparedness at international conference on disaster risk reduction in Bali

Press releases, 24.05.2022

Switzerland will participate in the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, the largest international conference on disaster risk reduction, in Bali, Indonesia, from 23 to 28 May 2022. Government representatives and experts from business, academia and civil society will discuss global policies to prevent disasters and emergencies. The conference will mobilise governments, the UN system and key stakeholders to step up disaster risk reduction efforts and advance the goals of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The largest conference in the field of disaster risk reduction will take place from 23 to 28 May 2022 in Bali, Indonesia. The conference is being convened by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and hosted by the government of Indonesia.

Joint action needed to address mounting disasters and emergencies
Joint action and effective countermeasures are essential to prevent hardship and suffering. Disaster risk reduction pays off in financial, social and economic terms. That is why in Bali, Switzerland will emphasise the need for investments in prevention and preparedness and more nuanced risk assessment methodologies.

Federal offices and interest groups widely represented
The Swiss delegation will attend the conference both in person and virtually. It will comprise representatives of the FDFA and SDC, the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), the Federal Office for Civil Protection (FOCP), MeteoSwiss and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). The National Platform for Natural Hazards (PLANAT), the Steering Committee Intervention against Natural Hazards (LAINAT), youth delegates and representatives of civil society, the scientific community and the private sector will also participate.

The International Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction has been held since 2007. Switzerland is a major hub of this conference. Five of the seven conferences that have taken place to date have been hosted and chaired by Switzerland in Geneva – most recently in May 2019.

Jointly agreed framework for action
The conference is based on a jointly agreed framework for action, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030. It promotes and monitors the implementation of the Sendai Framework and serves as a forum for the various stakeholders to exchange knowledge and experience.

Outcomes
The outcomes of the conference in Bali will inform the deliberations of the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York in July 2022. The conference is also part of the mid-term review of the Sendai Framework. The outcomes of the Sendai Framework, for their part, will form the basis for a political declaration by the states in New York in spring 2023.
