The AfDB plays a central role in Switzerland's international cooperation. It is committed to sustainable economic growth, poverty reduction and the fight against climate change.
Following the downgrading of the credit rating of a non-regional member state, the governors of the AfDB decided in May 2024 to increase the guarantee capital to secure the bank's highest credit rating. The increase serves as additional security so that the AfDB can continue to support its members in times of crisis.
By participating in this measure, Switzerland is not only helping to strengthen the stability of the AfDB but is also assuring its influence in the bank. Switzerland's commitment of CHF 1,561.36 million consists solely of guarantee capital. Guarantee capital is a contingent liability that can only be drawn on under exceptional circumstances, which has never happened to date.
This commitment sends an important signal of solidarity with Africa and emphasises the continent’s importance for Switzerland’s development policy, foreign policy and foreign trade interests. Switzerland has been a member of the AfDB since 1982 and has been represented on the Board of Governors ever since it joined.
