Artisanal mining organisation recertified for Fairmined ecological label

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. 21.09.2017 -- “XAMODX” NGO, operated by some 300 artisanal miners in Bayan-Ovoo soum, Bayankhongor aimag, became the first Artisanal and Small-scale Mining organisation in Asia and one of only two in the world to receive Fairmined Ecological Gold certification from the Alliance for Responsible Mining - a special Fairmined label for gold produced without the use of mercury or cyanide - having fulfilled more than 200 standards affirming that the organisation’s operations were economically, technologically and environmentally responsible.

Dulamjav sits in the simply furnished office of the khoroo governor. An engineer by profession, the 58-year old woman is now a full-time politician. On May 24, 2017, the Government of Mongolia passed the resolution No.151 to approve revised regulations on Mineral extraction of artisanal and small-scale mining. This is a result of the partnership between the Ministry of Mining and Heavy Industry (MMHI) and the Sustainable Artisanal Mining (SAM) project of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and other stakeholders in the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector.
